Department Description

The Department of Medicine is the largest department at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital (ZSFG) and the second largest department in the School of Medicine (second only to Medicine-Parnassus). The Department is divided into 14 Divisions/ Centers plus Central Administration and operates 33 outpatient clinics, 4 inpatient services, and 14 consult services. The total annual budget is over $200 million, which provides salary support for the following full time equivalents: 203 core faculty, 60 volunteer faculty, 82 clinical fellows, 30 staff physicians, and 418 staff employees.

Central Administration at the ZSFG site is responsible for directing the administrative functions of the department across all divisions and units at ZSFG. In addition, Central Administration is instrumental in advocating on behalf of the Department of Medicine and collaborating with ZSFG and the City and County of San Francisco (CCSF). The Department manages a $24 million CCSF budget, the hospital Affiliation contract, which adds a layer of organizational and bureaucratic complexity that is further complicated by the fact that UCSF and CCSF have different missions. Due to the complexity of the UCSF/ ZSFG/ CCSF relationship and the restricted resources at Medicine SFGH, there is a relatively centralized organizational structure where revenue and risk for the department is largely managed by Central Administration.
