Expectations:

The Chief Resident will have first line responsibility for supervising and teaching junior residents and medical students in primary care practices and direct patient care. S/he will assist the Program Director and Program Manager in maintaining the quality of the Internal Medicine Residency Training Program. S/he will have limited attending responsibilities for House Staff on the inpatient general medicine service. S/he will be a junior member of the faculty and maintain direct care patient responsibilities; manages morning reports, observe and critique the skills of residents in their programs; precept medical students and resident rounds; develop and manage schedules; demonstrate leadership and consistent commitment to improving the program.

EDUCATION:
1. Graduate of medical schools in the United States or Canada accredited either by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME), or accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA).

2. Graduate of foreign medical schools outside the United States and Canada who meet one of the following
qualifications:
a. Receipt of a currently valid certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates
(ECFMG); or
b. Possession of a full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a U.S. licensing jurisdiction.

3. United States citizen graduates from foreign medical schools outside the United States and Canada who cannot
qualify under (2) above, but who have successfully completed the licensure examination in a U.S. jurisdiction, one in
which the law or regulations provide that a full and unrestricted license to practice will be granted without further
examination after successful completion of a specific period of graduate medical education;

4. Graduate of medical schools in the United States and its territories not accredited by the LCME but recognized by
the educational and licensure authorities in a medical licensing jurisdiction, who have completed the procedures
described in (3) above;

5. Graduate of foreign medical schools outside the United States who have completed a Fifth Pathways program
provided by an LCME accredited medical school.

EXPERIENCE/TRAINING:
Required: completed three years of Internal Medicine training, is eligible to take the qualifying examination in this specialty and will sit for the American Board of Internal Medicine exam in August of his/her Chief year.

LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS:
Required:
Current Basic Life Support Provider (BLS), Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support Provider (ACLS) issued by
American Heart Association,
Current unrestricted Physician and Surgeon A with Furnishing License issued by Medical Board of California
Current Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) number issued by DEA
Required: to apply and become a member of the medical staff.

SKILLS:
Knowledge Of. Regulatory agencies such as the ACGME, ABIM and The Joint Commission and their respective mandates that govern the Internal Medicine Residency Training Program; knowledge of OSHA guidelines, use of the Internet, e-mail, word processing, presentation and spreadsheet software.
Ability To. Listen; impart knowledge while learning; effectively lead; teach, evaluate manage and problem solve; circulate materials of interest to the residents; ensure research projects are communicated, planned, monitored and completed according to established guidelines; communicate well; set priorities; be fair and maintain equity in decision making; work well with a diverse group of people; build a cohesive team; demonstrate intellectual honesty; exercise independent judgement; minimize interruptions; remain accessible to residents and attending at least 24 hours of the work week; diffuse potentially volatile situations. ability to learn quickly; pay attention to detail, update residency web page.
