Scope of Position

This position is responsible for providing technical solutions for both standalone and PV/Wind coupled battery energy storage systems. This includes performing energy storage system sizing, storage field designs, engineering design optimization, data analysis, performance engineering and operational assessments, technical support and value engineering solutions. Energy Storage Engineers work directly with Grid Scale Power and Asset Optimization business units to help develop new storage projects, support the construction and commissioning of projects in implementation, and ensure the successful operation of existing assets.

Responsibilities

Energy Storage System Sizing and Design

    Utilize internal and industry software tools to perform engineering design & estimates for projects, considering the battery technologies, site conditions, engineering principles and project design requirements.
  • Understanding the stationary energy storage use cases & applications. Analyze solar PV and/or wind power plant energy production estimates to appropriately size a battery energy storage system for hybrid renewable power plants.
  • Deriving system sizing requirements for various battery technologies, operating restrictions, system losses, degradation rates, efficiency and periodic capacity augmentation requirements.
  • Review and understand the applicable safety standards related to stationary energy storage systems. Ensure the product and project designs meets the requirements of these standards
  • Design, prepare, and modify project site layouts using industry standard software.
  • Assist GIS team in the development and evaluation of constraint maps for project sites.
  • Support project managers, developers, and other stakeholders with bid activities, dossiers, project technical requirements, and preparation of requests for proposals (RFPs).
  • Derive and create new methodologies, tools, processes and procedures to enhance the current work practices and tools, as part of continuous improvement, while focusing on reliability and accuracy of the processes and tools.

Project Support and Optimization

  • Contribute to project teams throughout a project's life cycle by working closely with EPCs and stakeholders, attending project meetings, reviewing designs, contributing to engineering specifications, providing regular design updates, informing the team of the impact of various design/cost configurations, and in general helping resolve issues that arise requiring technical expertise.
  • Take part in cross functional design optimization efforts for projects to maximize competitiveness and reduce levelized cost of storage (LCOS). Assist project teams with the optimization process and
  • recommend new optimization strategies.
  • Analyze the performance and reliability tests during project commissioning phase and ensure compliance with contractual requirements.
  • Provide support throughout the financing and/or divestment process; and due diligence activities for project acquisitions.
  • Provide general support regarding subject matter expertise throughout the company.

Data Analysis

  • Perform detailed plant performance analysis of operating storage assets. This includes actual vs predicted comparisons of degradation rates, efficiencies, losses, uptime, use case profile and other performance metrics.
  • Report and present results to management.

Site Visits and Conferences

  • Attend site visits for projects during the construction and commissioning phases, as needed.
  • Attend industry trade shows, seminars, and conferences.

Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent engineering discipline from an accredited institution.

  • Minimum of 2 to 4 years of experience working with battery storage technologies such as lithium-ion, lead-acid, flow, etc. Experience in the industry is preferred.

  • Experience with various Microsoft Office Suite, such as Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.

  • Experience with engineering, statistical, and data visualization & analysis software such as, AutoCAD, Minitab, Tableau, etc., is a plus.

  • Programming experience with Python or similar software tools is a plus.

Working Conditions:

Approximately 90% of time is spent in the office environment, utilizing computers (frequent use of various Microsoft software/programs), phones, and general office equipment. Approximately, 10% of time is spent outside of the office visiting project sites or attending various conferences and meetings.

This role's annual base salary range is between $72,000 and $120,000.
