DESCRIPTION

The Chief Financial Officer for the UC San Diego Health Physicians Group (UCSDHPG) plays a crucial role in overseeing the financial operations and strategies of the Physician Group, a multi-specialty medical group consisting of 1,200 employed physicians providing services in three hospital campuses and numerous ambulatory settings across the region. The UCSDHPG CFO reports to the UC San Diego Health System CFO, with direct accountability to the CEO and COO of the UCSDHPG. General responsibilities of the CFO UCSDHPG include oversight of financial accounting and reporting, financial planning and analysis for the UCSDHPG organization, leadership of project management and operational efficiency activities, provider compensation and benchmarking support, effective utilization or resources, team leadership and development and active participation in the strategic financial planning for the UC San Diego Health System.

Accounting and Financial Reporting
* Directs the Controller to ensure that monthly financial statements are produced timely and accurately in conformance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and University policies
* Ensures that internal control processes are adequate, documented and consistently applied
* Prepare and present financial reports to the UC San Diego executive team, Physician Group Board and other leadership forums
* Collaborates with the Medical Center Controller to coordinate accounting and reporting processes across the health system
* Streamline existing financial processes to promote efficiency and accuracy
* Review cash flow and balance sheet accounts for accuracy and assist the Health System CFO with inter-company transfers and cash flow management
* Implement effective cash management policies for ambulatory services
Financial Planning and Analysis:
* Oversee the financial performance of the organization consistently and accurately translating financial results to operational leaders
* Oversee the development of informed, realistic annual operating plans, related budgets and forecasts in collaboration with operational leaders and executives
* Develop and maintains short term and long term financial projections
* Analyze financial data and trends to provide insights and recommendations to senior management informing and tracking performance improvement initiatives
* Monitors and report on key financial metrics compared to trend, budget, and industry benchmarks
* Support the development of business and recruitment planning
Leadership and Team Management:
* Provide leadership to the UCSDHPG finance team, fostering a culture of accountability and continuous improvement
* Review and implement necessary training for staff to ensure compliance with documented policies and procedures
* Develop and utilizes staff to effectively support new and ongoing programs
* Maintain an efficient, cost effective team, carefully utilizing staff resources
* Provide direction to subordinate managers on setting goals, performance management, and career development
* Promote a culture that supports open and honest communications and openly support policies and practices that recognize the importance of diversity
* Collaborate with other executives, health system support departments such as Revenue Cycle and Supply Chain, as well as School of Medicine departments leaders and staff to align financial goals with overall organizational objectives
* Collaborate with revenue cycle to optimize revenue and professional fee billing
* Identify and assess financial risks and in conjunction with operational and executive leadership, implement strategies to mitigate such risks
* Possess strong communication skills and the appropriate interpersonal skills to effectively communicate financial performance and strategies to stakeholders
Strategic Leadership
* Contributes to the development and execution of the organization's overall strategic plan
* Collaborate with other executives, health system support departments such as Revenue Cycle and Supply Chain, as well as School of Medicine departments leaders and staff to align financial goals with overall organizational objectives
* Collaborate with revenue cycle to optimize revenue and professional fee billing
* Identify and assess financial risks and in conjunction with operational and executive leadership, implement strategies to mitigate such risks
* Maintains in-depth knowledge of the change clinical environment, payment practices/regulations and their impact on the organization
* Help identify opportunities for contracting and price improvement
* Stays abreast of technological advances relevant to financial management
Provider Compensation Benchmarking
* Oversee the provider compensation and productivity benchmarking team
* Provide insights on local and industry standards and benchmarks for compensation and productivity
* Utilize benchmarks to evaluate staffing and expense profiles in the clinics, identify opportunities for improvement
* Track progress on performance improvement efforts
* Participate on the Clinical Compensation Committee, providing technical support and education to leadership
* In conjunction with the Health System Controller, assist in the evaluation and implementation of financial systems and technologies to improve efficiency and accuracy
* Stay abreast of technological advancements relevant to financial management

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting or relevant field of study, and ten or more years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Five or more years' experience in a senior healthcare finance position.
  • Highly advanced knowledge of finance and accounting in a multi-specialty medical group
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and all applicable statements of the Governmental Accounting Standards Board.
  • A demonstrated understanding of all elements of health care delivery, including strategy, business planning, operations, finance, and practice plan management including professional compensation.
  • Highly advanced knowledge of regulatory compliance requirements.
  • Highly advanced problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Highly advanced interpersonal skills to work effectively across all levels of the organization.
  • Advanced skills in identifying process improvements and leading successful change management.
  • Advanced management and leadership skills.
  • Highly developed judgment, decision-making, and critical thinking skills.
  • Current knowledge of accounting best practices.
  • Highly developed verbal and written communication skills. Ability to present complex financial information in a manner that produces action and results.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Advanced degree in related field of study (finance, accounting, MBA, MHA)
  • Experience in an academic healthcare system

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $169,100 - $400,300 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $80.99 - $191.71

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
