Hiring Range

The University of California, Merced is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The full salary range for this position is STEP 1:$28.92- STEP 5:$34.81. The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is STEP 1:$28.92.


Job Closing Date

This position is career contingent upon funding with an expected end date of June 30, 2027.

About the Job

The Program Coordinator will primarily be responsible for maintaining, testing, and conducting control experiments for research instrumentation in the School of Natural Sciences. This includes performing standard technical procedures to support PhD students, postdoctoral scholars, and faculty researchers. Additionally, the candidate will oversee the ordering, receiving, storing, and testing functionality of laboratory equipment and supplies. They will work closely with the Project Director/Principal Investigator to ensure the smooth operation of research projects within the lab. The Coordinator will oversee finance, HR, and facility operations for a mid-sized academic program in the School of Natural Sciences and be responsible for administering program components, organizing events, and coordinating with campus units.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Maintains, tests, and conducts control experiments for research instrumentation and performs standard technical procedures (e.g., prepping grids for TEM, running nucleic acid and protein gels, preparing media, taking absorbance readings, determining biomolecule or microbe concentrations for working stocks) in support of PhD students, postdoctoral scholars, and faculty researchers.
  • Manages and administers mid-sized to large programs with primary responsibility for administrative and programmatic activities, such as scheduling team meetings (weekly, monthly, and annually) and organizing yearly meetings for the multi-institution collaborative and external advisors and evaluators. Interfaces with research accounting to keep track of financial expenditures for the different components of the program (i.e., research, travel, meetings/conferences, payroll). Provides timeline and milestone updates and ensures that project participants meet objectives. Works closely with the Project Director to communicate across the collaborative and to ensure that participants are working collaboratively and in a productive manner per the funded scope of work. Prepares equipment and supplies for student trips (e.g., environmental sampling expeditions) and makes cost estimates for all laboratory-related travel. Reconciles all paperwork (e.g., travel reports and receipts) for lab-related travel. The individual selected will supervise undergraduate students in the proper use, maintenance, and packing/unpacking of equipment during such travel events.
  • Manages internal and external (i.e., public) relations, including updating websites and other webbased media platform presence. Maintains MSDS and other chemical and biomaterials databases for the project director's laboratory.
  • Participates in the program budgeting and accounting processes to support financial infrastructure of the program. Keeps track of expenditures in all avenues of the institute (research, training, outreach, education) and communicates budgetary constraints and issues that may arise during each fiscal year. Informs administration of quarterly expenditures to maintain fiscal accountability and alignment of the institute goals. Manages supply and equipment ordering, receiving, proper storage, and testing.

Qualifications

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma and/or equivalent certification/experience/training. (Required)
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university in a related field. (Preferred)
  • Graduation from high school or a General Education Diploma and five years of laboratory experience or two years of college including courses in the natural, physical or social sciences and four years of laboratory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledges and abilities essential to successful performance of the duties assigned to the position. (Required)
  • Three (3) years of professional experience working with large programmatic institutes/centers. Experience with tracking program progress of students/trainees or equivalent experience and working with diverse working groups (research, training, outreach). (Preferred)

CRITICAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • Demonstrated professional knowledge and operational expertise within designated area of program focus. (Preferred)
  • Program planning, development, implementation, and leadership skills.
  • Skilled in examining and evaluating operations and developing and/or re-engineering operating strategies, systems, and procedures. (Preferred)
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively communicate with a wide range of individuals and constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Ability to determine informational needs, to collect and analyze information, and to devise and develop statistical analyses and reports.
  • Ability to develop and deliver both oral and written Presentations.
  • Ability to use independent judgment and to manage and impart information to a range of clientele and/or media sources.
  • Ability to make administrative/procedural decisions and judgments. Ability to develop and implement funding strategies and programs.
