Department of Mechanical Engineering

Work Schedule This is a part-time position: 20 hours per week: non-exempt position. This position is not eligible for benefits. This is a grant-funded position, which expires on or before August 14, 2026, and is subject to renewal upon availability of funding.

Essential Functions: Under the general supervision of the project PI. The Post-Doctoral Research Associate is responsible for leading research in additive manufacturing of metallic alloys. The project involves both experimental and modeling work on wire-laser additive manufacturing of metallic alloys. The incumbent is responsible for designing and implementing research experiments and simulations; adapting new procedures, methods, or instrumentation relative to research procedures; collecting, preparing, and analyzing research data; documenting and summarizing the results and recording research data; publishing innovative research in high-level peer-reviewed leading technical journals; presenting cutting-edge research at technical conferences; overseeing laboratory safety and equipment maintenance; overseeing personnel in the laboratory to coordinate research efforts for increased efficiency; training of students and volunteer workers; and assisting with ordering and procurement of supplies and equipment, and with general maintenance of laboratory.

Requirements:

  • Doctoral degree in materials science engineering, manufacturing engineering, mechanical engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Laboratory experience in additive manufacturing, and experience using instruments and data analysis such as: metallography techniques and optical microscopy, electron microscopy, mechanical testing, and other materials characterization methods, as well as experience with computer simulation methods.
  • Have a record of independent research publications.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Laboratory experience working directed energy deposition additive manufacturing, metallurgy, and materials characterization techniques including electron backscattered spectroscopy; e
  • Computer programming and FEM software programs. A proven publication record in metal additive manufacturing.
  • Familiarity with and willingness to explore methods to design for additive manufacturing.

The Post-Doctoral Research Associate must demonstrate an interest or ability to work in a multicultural/multiethnic environment. A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered a position with the UAS.
