Junior Specialist Research position at UCSF

The Chan Laboratory in the Department of Ophthalmology at UC San Francisco is currently recruiting for a Junior Specialist to assist in basic science and translational research projects. Our laboratory is broadly interested in studying corneal and ocular diseases. In particular, our lab studies Fuchs endothelial corneal dystrophy, a major cause of corneal blindness. We are using molecular and biochemical approaches to study a couple of a major mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of disease. The overall goal of our research is to use advanced research techniques to study disease pathogenesis with the goal of identifying novel therapeutic targets.

We are looking for a hard-working and self-motivated scientist who can think critically and perform mentored wet lab research with a senior scientist, but also able to work independently. Research approaches include mouse models, molecular biology techniques, biochemistry, cell culture, histology, microscopy, and flow cytometry. Prior experience with animal husbandry, and cell and molecular biology techniques are strongly desired. Responsibilities include designing and conducting experiments, analyzing data, preparing and presenting research findings at meetings, helping write scientific manuscripts, and applying for fellowships/grants.

Required Qualifications: The successful candidate will have a BA/BS/BSc degree in Molecular and Cell Biology or related field (or equivalent degree) by the time of hire, exemplary written/verbal English communication skills, and strong organizational skills. Duration: Minimum of 2 years with advancement to the second year dependent upon satisfactory progress during the first year. The appointment may be extended beyond 2 years contingent on funding and satisfactory performance.
