Pay Range

$110,700.00 - $142,128.00 Annually for the SES.1 level

$132,810.00 - $170,556.00 Annually for the SES.2 level

Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.


Job Description

NOTE: This is a flexible term position dependent on project funding. Current funding is expected for at least 3 years.

The Bioscience and Biotechnology division within Physical and Life Sciences at LLNL is seeking to fill a position for a dedicated and hardworking Biosciences Technician. You will provide technical support in scientific instrument operation, sample preparation, analysis, experimental design & execution and data collection for pharmacology and toxicology applications including studies on the metabolism and disposition of drugs and toxicants using various analytical and biochemical techniques. You will be expected to work independently on defined research projects within a team of scientists. This position is in the Human Health Sciences group in the Biosciences and Biotechnology Division.


You will:

  • Follow standard laboratory protocols, perform metabolism and pharmacokinetic studies of drugs and toxicants using in vitro and in vivo techniques.
  • Perform technical laboratory procedures, where attention to detail, effective troubleshooting skills and good judgment are required.
  • Work with radiolabeled material and small laboratory animals
  • Operate a variety of laboratory equipment used in drug/metabolite analysis including high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC/MS).
  • Participate in laboratory group meetings.
  • Maintain an accurate and detailed laboratory notebook and maintain complete records of experiments.
  • Maintain a clean and safe laboratory work area; perform daily maintenance, clean up, and workspace organization within assigned work areas.

Additional duties at the SES.2 level:

  • Analyze current process procedures and provide feedback for the optimization and improvement of workflow.
  • Perform quality control and maintenance of laboratory equipment and robotics.
  • Provide occasional training on laboratory procedures to other employees.
  • Offer feedback, identify areas of improvement and efficiency on laboratory protocols.
  • Attend and present technical status reports at meetings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • BA/BS degree in Toxicology, Biology, Biochemistry or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience with minimal related experience.
  • Basic knowledge of biology techniques and procedures and/or drug/toxin metabolic pathways
  • Basic knowledge, experience and skills in Ultra/High Performance Liquid Chromatography and Mass spectrometry
  • Ability to use scientific instruments and operate standard equipment in routine assignments.
  • Willingness to work with small laboratory animals
  • Ability to follow directions and standard written laboratory protocols.
  • Sufficient Analytical and problem-solving skills to troubleshoot discrepancies in data results and make routine recommendations.
  • Basic computer skills, including experience with standard software and database programs such Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively in an interdisciplinary team environment and present and explain technical information.
  • Workeffectively in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment both independently and as a team with a diverse set of scientists, administrative, and other technical staff
  • Effective problem-solving skills to implement solutions of limited complexity.
  • Ability to work weekends.

Qualifications at the SES.2 level:

  • MA/MS in degree in Toxicology, Biology, Biochemistry or related field.
  • Laboratory experience in biochemistry procedures including in vitro cellular assays.
  • Familiarity with automatic high-throughput instrumentation (i.e. HPLC, LC/MS).

Qualifications we desire:

  • Experience working with acutely hazardous chemicals.
  • Experience working with small experimental animals.
  • Familiarity with automatic high-throughput instrumentation (i.e. HPLC, LC/MS).
  • Ability to learn and develop new skills and techniques to keep pace with technological changes.
