Job Description
Applications Engineer III
Job Locations US-CA-Emeryville
Req. # 2024-16145 # of Openings 1 Position Type Employee
Overview

At Bruker Cellular Analysis (BCA), we create products using advanced optofluidic technology that enable customers to screen the function of individual cells and recover cells of interest for downstream application. For example, our Opto B Discovery workflows screen tens of thousands of B cells to identify the best antibody lead candidates in a fraction of the time and cost of other methods.

The Applications R&D Team is primarily responsible for enabling a diversity of biological workflows using BCA's optofluidic technology, principally on the Beacon Optofluidic System. Leveraging our proprietary opto-electropositioning (OEP) technology to move particles, the Beacon system enables single-cell isolation, culture, and a multitude of assays. Ultimately, the system enables automation and miniaturization of conventional laboratory processes-often in a fraction of the time-in addition to enabling novel capabilities. To enable new workflows on the Beacon system, the Applications R&D group must leverage domain expertise in single-cell manipulation and analysis, microscopy, automation, microfluidics, and cell and molecular biology.

This Applications Engineer role resides at the interface of several teams within the organization, including the Software and Hardware Engineering teams, the Biology and Chemistry teams, and Product Management. In this position, you will have the opportunity to create new capabilities on BCA's optofluidic systems, taking products from early conception through product launch. The workflows developed by the Applications R&D team enable new avenues of biological inquiry that are highly valuable to our customers. We welcome collaborative, innovative, and resourceful scientists and engineers to join us.

Responsibilities
End-to-end workflow development involving precious sample handling, microfluidic assay development, and workflow automation.
  • Contribution to the invention of core intellectual property (from conception through validation), white papers, and external publications.
  • Validation and verification of complex life science instrumentation.
Qualifications
  • Familiarity with cell/tissue culture, cell-based assays, and microscopy platforms; working knowledge of modern molecular and cell biology techniques.
  • Ability to operate and troubleshoot complex electromechanical, optical, and micro/nanofluidic instrumentation as well as robotics.
  • Ability to thrive in early-stage technology development with demanding schedules and deliverables.
  • Proficient data analysis skills and understanding of statistics; ability to convey data clearly and generate insights with data-mining software (e.g. Tableau, Spotfire, or custom data analysis tools).
  • Ability to excel in a team-first, supportive work environment, and can clearly articulate ideas, problems, and solutions.
  • Would enjoy the opportunity to foster relationships with customers and enable new capabilities with transformative technology.
  • Programming experience in a language such as Python, Java, or MATLAB; exposure to object-oriented programming.
  • Experience in the theory, design, and development of microfluidic systems is a plus.
  • MS or PhD with 0-3 years of experience in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Bioengineering, Biomedical Engineering, Biophysics, or other multidisciplinary engineering fields with exposure to biological applications.
