Position Summary Information

Primary Purpose
Reporting to the Enterprise Systems Manager and a member of the Pacific Technology division, the Systems Administrator II (Linux) is responsible for installing, configuring, and maintaining computing equipment and services. Management of servers in support of business and academic processing requirements is an essential requirement of this position. Responsible for auditing server security and implementing upgrades as necessary to meet University security policies and procedures. Work with existing staff to implement and troubleshoot systems to meet the university mission.
Essential Functions
Server Management/Systems Administration:
  • Performs software installations and upgrades to Linux operating systems and application packages.
  • Maintenance and support of Linux and DNS Systems and DHCP.
  • Develop and modify scripts using python or other scripting language to automate processes.
  • Monitors and tunes systems to achieve optimum levels of performance.
  • Manages Linux systems patching and upgrades using industry standards and guidelines.
  • Performs routine security and configuration audits.
  • Ensures workstation/server data integrity by evaluating, implementing, and managing appropriate software and hardware solutions.

Technical Project Management:
  • Researches, recommends, and acts as a technical deployment lead of enterprise systems and services utilizing commercial and open-source tools.
  • Develop and promote standard operating procedures.
  • Researches, proposes, and implements improvement to the Linux academic and business systems for the University.
  • Fosters collaborative support among administrators of servers and coordinates/documents problem resolutions.
  • Troubleshoots service failures to university Linux systems with root cause analysis and implements solutions.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in a computer related field. (Two (2) years of full-time experience in the same or similar position is equal to one (1) year of completed post-high school education coursework).
  • Three (3) years of experience managing complex Linux systems.
  • One (1) year experience managing some of the following technologies: Linux servers, DNS, BIND, and DHCP management, server virtualization, VMWare, AWS, and identity and access management.
Preferred Qualifications
Skills/Knowledge and Expertise:
  • Ability to support DNS/BIND Linux environment, various flavors of Linux, and upgrades migrations of systems between old Linux variations and new Linus variations.
  • Ability to support Sympa mailing systems, integrations, upgrades, troubleshooting, and management.
  • Ability to support and troubleshoot servers in a multi-vendor environment with limited supervision.
  • Ability to comfortably discuss computing topics with varying levels of personnel from student to CIO.
  • Ability to provide solutions to integrate various disparate systems into a single service offering using existing knowledge and research.
  • Knowledge and understanding of project management best practices.
  • Must be capable of prioritizing and meeting deadlines for wide-ranging technical projects.
  • Positive attitude, proven ability to work successfully with diverse populations and demonstrated commitment to promote and enhance diversity and inclusion.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills with both internal and external constituents, including the ability to create and deliver clear, powerful and concise presentations and proposals.
  • Broad knowledge of current and emerging technologies, technology directions, and strategic application to institutional needs, including the ability to differentiate between a relevant trend and hype.
  • Experience and sensitivity in working with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Demonstrated experience in advancing social justice, equity, and inclusion in a university setting.
  • Ability to engage and integrate culturally responsive practices and knowledge in their work.

Work Environment/Work Week/Travel:
Work is primarily performed in a standard office environment with use of computer and phone. Remote flexibility options are available as requested. Work performed during standard business hours; additional time may be required to meet business deadlines.

Valid driver's license required. Incumbent must also be able to meet the University's fleet rules and be eligible to drive for university business. The University's insurance carrier reserves the right to exclude applicants based on their driving record.
Hiring Range $40.00 - $50.00 per hour. We consider factors such as, but not limited to, scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's qualifications, internal equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
